Union Spotlight: Salisbury University Guerrieri University Center

Guerrieri University Center opened its doors in 1988 with a primary goal of "supporting the mission of the university," said Lawanda Dockins-Gordy, director. The facility was named after the Guerrieri family, "long time friends and benefactors of the university," Dockins-Gordy said.

Recently, the union had its first small renovation when the main lounge, called the Fireside Lounge, was redesigned. The area now includes computer kiosks, group/collaborative work space, specially designed furnishings, plasma televisions, TV gaming systems, game equipment, and more.

Unique features

Since the redesign, the new main lounge has become a favorite spot of students. "It has been identified as a great spot for students to come together," Dockins-Gordy said.

"[It] is the most popular gathering space in the building for group collaborative work and social purposes because of the location, comfort, and hours it is open [7:30 a.m.–4:30 p.m. weekdays]."

In addition to the Fireside Lounge, the union has an information desk, cyber café, spirituality center, writing center, eateries, art gallery, meeting rooms, and outdoor patios.

Students’ role

According to Dockins-Gordy, "students play a vital role in all we do." Not only do students make up the majority of the workforce for the Guerrieri University Center, they also are involved in all aspects of the union. For example, with the redesign of the lounge, "students were involved with everything from furniture selections to colors to fabrics," Dockins-Gordy said.

A highly successful program sponsored by the union is T.I.F., or Totally For You Final Exams Program. Created in the late 1980s by Dockins-Gordy, the program is an attempt to reduce stress and support students through finals exam week. "We offer free seated massages, coordinate and schedule group study times and invite faculty who teach those classes to stop in, extend building hours, provide free snacks and coffee, and extend the computer lab hours, and more," Dockins-Gordy said.
