New professional standards book released

The Council for the Advancement of Standards in Higher Education, or CAS, has released the sixth edition of the “Book of Professional Standards for Higher Education.” ACUI is a charter member of CAS, a consortium of 35 professional organizations dedicated to promulgating professional standards for student learning personal development support programs and services in higher education.

“The sixth edition of the Book of Professional Standards for Higher Education includes examples of learning development outcomes and offers new standards in service-learning,” said Jan Arminio, CAS president.

Standards that might interest ACUI members include College Union, Campus Activities, Commuter Students, Fraternity and Sorority, Student Leadership, Student Orientation, and Alcohol and Other Drug Programs. Through ACUI’s membership in CAS, the College Union Standard and Campus Activities Standard are available at no cost to ACUI members online at www.acui.org.

Along with the book, CAS offers the Self-Assessment Guide CD-ROM Version 3.0, which contains 35 sets of functional area self-assessment guides. The CD also includes a PowerPoint presentation and an e-learning course for conducting assessments.

In August, CAS also announced the release of a new book, “Frameworks for Assessing Learning and Development Outcomes.” This new publication from CAS “is complete with a theoretical description of the learning outcome domains, assessment examples, list of possible research instruments, and additional resources,” Arminio said.

Those interested in how to use the frameworks and CAS Standards more effectively might want to attend in the National Symposium on Standards, Self-Assessment, and Student-Learning Outcomes to be held Nov. 12–13, in Washington, D.C. The event is meant to educate professionals on how to conduct self-assessments and use the CAS Standards and new Frameworks for Assessing Learning and Development Outcomes.

All CAS publications are available for purchase online at www.bookstore.acui.org. For more information about the symposium, please contact ACUI’s CAS liaison, Bob Rodda, at rroddda@wooster.edu.
