Program Description

Civically engaged leadership is about preparing students to use their leadership skills as active citizens in our democracy. The recent release of the important report from the Association of American Colleges and Universities, A Crucible Moment: College Learning and Democracy’s Future, highlights the disenchantment of college students with politics and other forms of civic engagement. They lament the deep divides and incivility that shape our politics, lack confidence in our nation’s political institutions, and question their efficacy to effect social change.

This webinar defines civic engagement and describes how leadership educators can infuse it into programs and courses to enable students to learn about and practice civically engaged leadership. It offers examples of how to help students understand the levers of social change, to become problem solvers rather than only problem identifiers, to gain confidence in themselves to act in the political arena, and to develop their identities as civically engaged citizens and leaders.
