This month the ACUI Central Office welcomed its new educational program coordinator, Susan Yung Maul. Maul comes to ACUI with more than 30 years of experience in higher education and college unions and almost as many years as an Association volunteer.

For the past 19 years Maul has served as the director of the Illini Union at the University of Illinois–Urbana-Champaign. Additionally, from 1993 to 1995 Maul was interim director of Assembly Hall at U of I. In her tenure at the Illini Union she also served as assistant director and program director.

"I really wasn't ready to stop working, but I did want different challenges," Maul said. "When the position opened up at ACUI, I couldn't believe my good fortune. This position would offer me the opportunity to continue working in a field and with professionals that I love, and also provide the challenges I was looking for. And then landing the position was a dream come true! I look forward to becoming a part of the ACUI Central Office team and putting my energies to work for the Association and the membership."

Maul has been an active volunteer with ACUI for many years; she was president of the Association from 1998–1999 and the 2001 Butts-Whiting award recipient. Maul was also instrumental in the Association's strategic planning process for its reinvention and has both planned and presented at several ACUI seminars and conferences.

Executive Director Marsha Herman-Betzen said: "Susan brings a breadth and depth of experience to this position that is unparalleled. She will add great value to the Central Office, while serving as a positive role model for staff and volunteers."

The screening committee for the search process was chaired by Corbin Smyth, assistant director of the Indiana Memorial Union at Indiana University. Other members of the committee were Elizabeth Beltramini, Kaye Cross, and Jack Voorhees from the Central Office; Mary Edgington, director of the Bowen-Thompson Student Union at Bowling Green State University and Board of Trustees member; and Zack Wahlquist, graduate student in higher education at Indiana University.

Smyth said he enjoyed his experience chairing the screening committee and is pleased that Maul will be ACUI's educational program coordinator. "Like any search process, I didn't know what to expect going in," Smyth said. "The screening committee was very fortunate to have several qualified applicants in our final pool. But after a successful interview process, it became clear to the committee and the Central Office staff that Susan was exactly the candidate for the position. We are all very pleased that Susan will continue to serve ACUI and its members."
