Collegiate Marketing Institute Grows in Second Year

BLOOMINGTON, IND. — Collegiate Marketing Institute at UNLVMore than 150 professionals met in Las Vegas this past November for the 2016 Collegiate Marketing Institute. This was the second time that ACUI joined with NIRSA: Leaders in Collegiate Recreation to produce the event. The event saw a 30% overall increase in attendance from 2014, with ACUI’s representation at the event doubling.

The institute kicked off with a keynote from Kurt Foriska, chief development officer and special assistant to the student life senior vice president at The Ohio State University. Foriska previously worked within marketing for both the union and recreational sports, enabling him to provide a unique perspective. Foriska spoke about the current marketing landscape in higher education. A majority of survey respondents (85.5%) were satisfied or very satisfied with the keynote, some even noting it as the best part of the event.

In addition to the keynote, educational sessions, roundtables, a networking lunch, a social event, and tours of the University of Nevada–Las Vegas Student Union and Student Recreation and Wellness Center were offered during the two-day event.

The majority (77.6%) of survey respondents were satisfied or very satisfied with the educational content of the program, which covered topics such as social media, marketing plans, brand development, design, student staff supervision, and more.

“This conference gave me an arsenal of information to bring back and implement at my institution,” said one attendee. “The conference inspired me and helped me grow professionally.”

The success of both the educational and networking opportunities at the event will help it to grow even more in the future, with 94.7% indicating they would attend again and 88.2% planning to recommend the event to a colleague.

“The Marketing Institute was a great way to network with staff members who are also in the marketing field and learn best practices for marketing within our facilities,” said another attendee.

Survey respondents also overwhelmingly (86.7%) felt that the partnership between the two organizations helped the program be more successful.

Collegiate Marketing Institute at UNLV“As a long-time ACUI member, it was beneficial to have the opportunity to network with colleagues from NIRSA,” said an attendee. “Even though we belong to different professional associations, we both share similar facilities and programs to market.”

There is room to further improve the partnership. Some ACUI members felt the program was geared more toward NIRSA members and had more recreation-based content, though did note the education received during such sessions was still applicable. As the two organizations work together on this institute in the future, ACUI will commit to ensuring members feel welcome and that educational content will be appropriate for all those attending.
