Fun with Facilities

  • Most of the leaks coming into our parking garage from the outside have stopped. Now we have leaks coming from inside our building.
  • We sent our three paper cutters off to maintenance hoping they could sharpen the blades. After three months of silence, our secretary wondered how much a new “guillotine-style” cutter would cost. Now, I’m trying to retrieve our old paper cutters.
  • After a year of taping green paper on walls, the media-savvy guys in the office want to paint a wall the appropriate shade of green to make a real green screen. They told me what to order, so I went online and read up on the painting process: first the cinder block wall they want to use has to be covered in sheetrock, coated with a special primer, followed by a coat or two of regular primer and then the green screen color (two coats). Be sure to paint in multiple directions on the wall so the camera doesn’t pick up any lines.  And then I find out that they have already ordered a portable green screen kit.
  • Rumor has it that the maintenance director is leaving. Oh great, there go the projects he’s been working on for me. We don’t need working lights in the ceiling anyway!
  • I was just assigned the “flag project” for the fourth time in six years. You know—flags of the nations around the inside perimeter of our First Floor concourse. Of course, my first call was to the guy who is rumored to be leaving. I’m waiting for his return call.
  • The student government is refurbishing the open lounge area across from their office. It will be gorgeous. It is supposed to be finished in six weeks even though the purchase orders haven’t actually made it to the vendors yet. And our designer won’t even tell me if the carpet is in stock because if the furniture comes first, you know who will have to figure out where and how to store it all.

Those of you not on the operations side of the house might think the above is a quick summary of the first half of the semester. Anyone in operations will tell you that I’m just relating the normal surprises that occur every week. Like a few weeks ago, when we realized that the four standing sign holders we ordered will be delivered individually. How useful.

The real reason she has stayed in this field is the pure joy of watching students learn and grow.
