I'm Back. Now What?

I arrived home after seven amazing days at the ACUI annual conference in Boston. I have at least 15 new Twitter contacts, a number of business cards, notes from the amazing educational sessions I attended, assignments for the Education Council to start, and so much more swirling around in my head it is starting to get confusing. So, “Why not make a list,” I said. Yeah, that is what you can find me doing most Mondays, Fridays, and upon any return from a trip. I will share my top 10 things to do when you return from conference.

  1. Get that travel reimbursement in, and make sure you have all the necessary documentation. I have found that each time I travel for my job it is different. Anyone else experience this?
  2. Add your new contacts to your address book, Twitter, Facebook, etc.
  3. Write down the three most important things you took away from conference that you want to accomplish right away.
  4. Set up a meeting with your supervisor to discuss these ideas and debrief the conference.
  5. Check in with those new folks from conference with whom you made contact.
  6. Check out the volunteer opportunities in your region and on the international level. Is there anything you want to or can contribute to?
  7. Sort through and organize all of the materials you brought home
  8. Do laundry.
  9. Relax and spend time with family and friends .
  10. Catch up on your sleep.

By making a list I am not feeling so overwhelmed. I know that is how I felt when I got in the office this morning. What meetings did I have, events going on, etc. It just helps put things into perspective.

Oh, and I almost forgot. If you came home with an idea for a session proposal for the 2013 annual conference in St. Louis, write it down, put it on your wall in your office where you can always see it. Consider submitting it as soon as possible; submissions are due by Aug. 1.

What did you did when you returned from conference?

Sarah, Great post about what to do upon returning to work. It can be overwhelming and I know I feel better just knowing that I have caught up on all of my emails! Phew! Thanks for the plug about session ideas for next year!

Sarah, great post on coming back to work from the conference. The parts on how to handle new ideas and inspirations that came from the conference resonate with me. Each time I come back from a conference, it is all about taking those ideas or epiphany moments from the conference and turning them into long-term plans and opportunities and bringing them to fruition.

Sarah, this is a great list to stay focused for getting back to work. Conference can be overwhelming with so much content/ideas you want to share. I love the idea of making an action plan, thank you for sharing!
