Union Spotlight: University of South Florida–St. Petersberg, University Student Center

SouthFloridaInfo History
The University Student Center at University of South Florida–St. Petersburg opened Aug. 25, 2012, and is “a major milestone in the evolution of the university,” said Dwayne Isaacs, assistant director.

The building was supported by students who “saw a need for a central gathering place” on campus, Isaacs said. Students partially funded the building through a special student fee.

“It took several years to accomplish, and today’s students are reaping the benefits of that hard work,” he said.

The Student Center is connected to a residence hall that has 200 beds and offers laundry and lounge facilities for students. More laundry facilities may be found in the union, along with a games room, dining room, outdoor basketball courts, and an 11,000-gallon saltwater fish tank.

Additionally, a first for the university is the grand ballroom, “outfitted with a state-of-the-art audio and visual technology and 7,000-square-feet of flexible programming and meeting space for our student organizations, university departments, and guests,” Isaacs said.

Students’ Role
“Students play major roles in the operations of our reservations service department,” Isaacs said. “They are our front-line staff members who greet and serve our guests with the best customer service possible.”

Students are also responsible for event set ups, audio-visual operations, and conference support.

Programming
In the short time since it was opened, the Student Center has hosted a masquerade ball, reading festival, science festival, and Winter Wonderland Celebration.
