Poets will match wit, humor, deep insight, and strategy in a tournament to determine the CUPSI Haiku Champ. Those who wish to slam should come armed with at least 25 haikus. No titles, no props, and no explanatory introduction or comments. Three judges selected from the audience will be equipped with red and non-red flags. Poets are matched up in pairs for head-to-head competition. Unlike a conventional slam, you have a direct competitor in every round. Slots are limited and audience members are welcome.

Ice Cream Conversations 2: Truth of Dairy
Saturday, April 9, 1:30–3 p.m., Union Patio, Texas Union (Rain Space: Black Box Theater, Student Activities Center)
In its second year, the Ice Cream Social Reading serves as a warm and communal space to wind down after an intense few days of competition. Pairing with a local ice cream vendor (Ashley's in Austin) we will provide ice cream for all interested poets, and provide a space for them to sit and enjoy it. While enjoying ice cream, there will be readings from respected and known poets (Sam Sax, Hieu Nguyen, Paul Tran, to name a few).

Community Service

This year we will be collecting items to be donated to Caritas of Austin, a local community based organization that helps assist individuals who do not have a stable place to call home. For more information about items we will be collecting please view their wishlist here.

"For over 50 years, Caritas of Austin has been a turning point in people’s lives. Each year we serve thousands of families and individuals who do not have a stable place to call home. Through comprehensive, relationship-based services, Caritas of Austin turns crisis into stability and empowers people toward the life they want.
