ACUI has run the collegiate clay target championships for more than 45 years. Thanks to exponential growth in the program since 2006 due to support across the shooting sports industry, the Clay Target Championship (CTC) Shotgun Bowl Series was developed. This program is consistent with other ACUI student programs and recreational activities such as poetry slam, table tennis, and 9-Ball billiards, which have a regional structure that feeds into the international competition.

Creation of the CTC series of regional events has allowed for additional competitive events in the shotgun sports, and teams are able to send portions of their team roster who are not able to travel to the international event in San Antonio. Regional ranges serve as liaisons to help produce the program.

MidwayUSA Foundation has generously supported these programs, allowing endowment funds to be given as awards in these events. Provided funds for participation as well as for placement on the podium totaled millions of dollars starting with more than $300,000 in endowment funds for the 2012-13 season for the 39 schools who attended. 2016 totaled $343,000 for more than 76 from nationals, not to mention the 11 conference championships. It's helped many teams go to nationals as they have built their accounts and applied for grants each year.

Growing from a 236-participant event in 2006 to a 698-student event in 2016 has been quite a journey. With the support of the industry as sponsors, mentors, volunteers, and event supporters, ACUI has welcomed students of all skill levels to the championships in San Antonio each year. This growth attracted new teams and media, and it gave the youth programs a bridge to the collegiate level. Activity in the youth arena by AIM, 4-H, SCTP, and USAYESS programs continually create demand from competition, training, and general interest. ACUI is proud to support these athletes at the college level with an academics-first approach, allowing individuals to represent their school while building their team ranks.

Eligibility for students must be supported by the registrar's office of the school they are enrolled in, and scores will be calculated for individual and team events by school.

The championships are held at the National Shooting Complex in San Antonio in late March depending on range availability. More than $35,000 in scholarships along with more than $300,000 in endowment funds from MidwayUSA Foundation were awarded in 2016.

The 2017 ACUI Collegiate Clay Target Championships are March 28–April 2.
