Battle of the Regions

Story Slam
Monday, March 20, 9–10:30 p.m.
R Eric ThomasACUI will present its first story slam in the spirit of poetry slam! The loose theme for this competition will be "(Strange but True) College Union Stories." Regional storytellers will have 5 minutes to tell a story! The story can be told by an individual or up to four persons (group piece) from a region. The evening will kick off with a feature by local Philadelphia storyteller, R. Eric Thomas, the regular host of The Moth StorySlam of Philadelphia and daily contributor to the humor column for ELLE.com, covering current events and pop culture.

Around the Hearth Debate
Tuesday, March 21, 8:30–10 p.m.
We return to our roots and history with debate societies, and in this spirit, we will foster an informal but lively series of dialogues to include as many regional members and viewpoints as possible. The Around the Hearth Debate is an amalgamation: part ESPN’s "Around the Horn" and a fireside conversation among friends. No research is required. Topics will not be made available to participants in advance. The program will be staged in two preliminary rounds with topics to be discussed. Debaters will have 5-7 minutes per series of topics and will be scored by two judges. The top four regions will move on to the final dialogues. Judges will loosely base scoring on the debater’s presentation, content, and reactions/rebuttals. Regions should be prepared to have three members on their teams. The moderator is ACUI CEO John Taylor. The points are not the point; the point is exchanging ideas and perspectives in a civil matter. The evening will kick off with a mock debate presented by the University of Pennsylvania Parliamentary Debate Society. They are the premier debate association on campus, competing in the American Parliamentary Debate Association, which is the main intercollegiate debate organization in the United States.
