On-Site Service Activities

  • Pop Tab Collection
Metal pull tabs will be collected until Noon, March 22 at the conference at the Conference Concierge in Franklin Hall A on the Fourth Floor. This Battle of the Regions "Tab War" will benefit Ronald McDonald House Charities, an organization founded in Philadelphia in 1974 as a home away from home for families with children undergoing medical treatment at local hospitals. Today, there are more than 300 Ronald McDonald Houses in more than 50 countries, and the organization collects pull tabs for recycling to offset operational expenses. More than $4 million has been generated for Ronald McDonald House Charities through their Pop Tab Collection Program.
  • Shoe Collection
Reusable pairs of men's, women's, and children's shoes will be collected until Noon, March 22 at the conference at the Conference Concierge in Franklin Hall A on the Fourth Floor. All types of athletic shoes, flats, loafers, sandals, heels, work boots, and dress shoes will be accepted to benefit Back On My Feet (BOMF), an organization founded in Philadelphia in 2007 to combat homelessness through community support, employment preparation, and housing assistance. BOMF's partnership with ShoeBox Recycling will clean and redistribute usable pairs of shoes into the community, as well as generate a monetary giveback for ACUI's Education and Research Fund.

  • Cradles to Crayons
During your 2017 ACUI conference you will be able to give back to our host city by making back-to-school cards of encouragement for local school-aged children in need! Cradles to Crayons provides Philadelphia children from birth through age 12, living in homeless or low-income situations, with the essential items they need to thrive—at home, at school, and at play. These items are supplied free of charge by engaging and connecting communities that have with communities that need, working through distribution partners such as Turning Points for Children, another local nonprofit organization that ACUI delegates will visit during the off-site trip at the conclusion of the conference. The Cradles to Crayons project will take place at the Meeting of the Delegates, Wednesday, March 22, 9:45 a.m. in the Grand Ballroom, Fifth Floor.

Off-Site Service Trip

Turning Points of Children
Sign up during conference registration to take a trip into the community and assist Turning Points for Children, an organization that works to bring social and health services to vulnerable people in Philadelphia through child placement foster/group/adoption programs and community-based services. With chronic poverty at the root of many of the issues that their families face, Turning Points' prevention programs are designed to look especially at difficult family relationships, child abuse and neglect, teen pregnancy, high dropout rates, unemployment and inadequate health care. Turning Points has worked to promote resilience and possibility within thousands of Philadelphia families for the past 175 years. ACUI delegates have the opportunity to visit Turning Points' headquarters and prepare materials for their annual fundraiser, Kids At Heart. The service trip will take place on Wednesday, March 22, 3–5 p.m. and depart from the Conference Concierge, Franklin Hall A, Fourth Floor.
