Addressing Current Issues at the Annual Conference

The annual conference is a unique opportunity to bring members from all ACUI's constituent groups together to contemplate and discuss important issues facing the profession and the Association. This year, two such issues will be brought into focus through educational and dialogue opportunities at the conference.

Diversity and Inclusion

The Council for Diversity and Inclusion will host three events at conference to share information about their work and promote dialogue about the issues facing the Association.

Council for Diversity and Inclusion Information Session

Council for Diversity & Inclusion Graffiti Wall
Tuesday, March 22, 10 a.m.–Noon
Stop by the Council for Diversity and Inclusion’s Graffiti Wall in the Community of Practice Fair to leave your response to the questions posted regarding these issues or tell us what questions you have that the council can build educational programming and tools for.

Ground-Level Social Action: Structured Idea Sharing
Wednesday, March 23, 7:45–8:15 a.m.
At a philosophical level, the ACUI community overwhelmingly agrees on the importance of diversity and inclusion. However, individuals have said they sometimes struggle with how to respond to inequities, support underrepresented populations, and understand their personal role in creating change. This program will allow participants share practical ideas for transforming their campus climate and advancing social justice. The hope is that each participant will bring three examples of successful practices to contribute.

Campus Shooting

In October 2015, after a shooting at Umpqua Community College, ACUI created an ad hoc committee dedicated to creating dialogue about campus shootings and campus safety. In addition to posts shared in The Commons and the webpage created to bring together all ACUI's resources on this topic, the Campus Shooting Dialogue Team is using the annual conference to educate members and launch its Week of Dialogue.
